Next Thursday: A Creative Life #002 with Stephanie Cheng

A Creative Life #002 with Stephanie Cheng on Thursday, March 20th

Join us next Thursday as we continue our A Creative Life series with a lively talk on navigating change with product manager, strategist, and entrepreneur Stephanie Cheng.

Over the past two decades, Stephanie has developed resilient internal frameworks for getting unstuck and finding joy. Whether in a job, a relationship, or a set of habits, her approach is built on honest self-inquiry, the tenacity to confront rejection, and a willingness to leap head-first into the unknown. These mindsets come together to create a field of possibility—opening new paths for reinvention, creative expression, and shaking off stagnation.

Akin to the artist’s journey—of overcoming resistance, finding comfort in uncertainty and boundless curiosity—this approach has helped Stephanie build a dynamic and globe-trotting career. She’s worked at Dreamworks and Netflix, founded a video game company, contributed to presidential campaigns, earned an MBA at MIT, and pursued a culinary fellowship in Spain. Each pivot has shaped, refined, and tested her theory of professional growth, playful living, and creative exploration. Today, Stephanie teaches her framework to business students at UC Berkeley Haas.

Stephanie will share her journey of reinvention—offering stories about facing risk, limitless imagination, and meaningful growth. Each example will illuminate how we can embrace change as a creative act, dream with wild abandon, and move with intention through our own unfolding.

Spring events & open hours

As we mentioned in our last email, there’s much more ahead this spring, and we hope you’ll join us for one of the many thoughtful events we have planned.

In the coming months, as part of our spring theme—The Habit of Adventure—we’ll explore scent-making and world-building with Dapo Oni for A Creative Life #003; screen a few films on the creative process for Educational Television; host a book launch for author Vicki Tan’s debut, Ask This Book A Question; learn about community building through film with Nate Zack; discuss We Run The Tides at WNP Book Club; and assemble for Too Much Information #004.

Alongside these specially crafted events, we are also hosting open hours every Saturday from 1–5 p.m. Come by, say hello, chat about what we’re up to, or simply spend some unstructured time in the space. No RSVPs needed.

Each month will also feature a special rotation of guest hosts, optional activities, and unique presentations: ambient DJ sets by Kia Kimera; Open Reference with Western Neighborhoods Project and Historienne Nicole Meldahl; record-spinning sets by the It’s All World Music project; and the informal Page Club, which invites you to bring a page from a book and read it aloud to the group.

We hope you’ll join us in the coming months for thoughtful conversations, illuminating screenings, and unhurried afternoons. Explore the full list of events on the Problem Library website.

See you soon.

The School of Other Fields: Now accepting summer applications

As we gear up for our first Spring season of The School of Other Fields, applications are now open for the Summer season. Applications will remain open until May 25th.

Starting on June 8th, the Summer season invites students to discover what matters most—and why—through group discussions, creative explorations, and the creation of a personal project.

Students are called to work with new mediums and ideas, as they strive to expand their skill set, sharpen their talents, and grow their self-awareness. The season ends on August 16th with a group exhibition open to family, friends, and the public.

The School of Other Fields is for teenagers and young adults with a deep curiosity about how their creative talents can enrich their lives and communities. It is a home for young artists, bookworms, makers, thinkers, and the highly self-motivated—those willing to invest time and energy to stretch beyond their comfort zones.

Here, curious minds explore the intersections of culture, human nature, and the creative disciplines, pushing the boundaries of their abilities alongside wholehearted mentors and peers.

Know someone who should hear about this? Share this news with friends, teachers, and anyone who can help spread the word.
