He who jumps into the void owes no explanation to those who stand and watch — Jean-Luc Godard
Tools trace the edges of our current capacity. When we lack tools we feel constrained and hampered. When we are familiar with and masterful in our tools, we are empowered and free. Our tools are the affordances and limits of our expression, forming the boundary of the ways we can create, respond, and engage with the world.
But the human creature is called to trespass boundaries—to leap into the void beyond the limits of our knowledge. Each crossing of the horizon is an adventure that enlarges our capacity, grants us new tools both within and without, and reshapes the boundaries of our being.
When we understand and develop our tools, press against the edges of our capacity, and cultivate a habit of adventure, we take part in the making of our potential. We become who we could be.
