For this third Saturday of March, drop in for a hand-picked vinyl set hosted by the It’s All World Music project.
Coined in the early 1900s and repackaged in the 1980s as a marketing ploy, “world music” was meant to describe music from “non-English speaking” countries. Some critics condemn the term for exoticizing other cultures, but at its core, it’s just nonsense—after all, every song you’ve ever heard is “world music.”
It’s All World Music is a pet project of two SF-based sons of immigrants, playing with the contradictions of the world music label by sharing records from across the globe. Each selection is an invitation to expand the world of music you enjoy.
Drop by to hear the sound of the world—or at least, the parts of it these guys found on vinyl.
