Fish of Memory: a workshop exploring how art, science, and migration intertwine.

Inspired by Between Science and Art: On Painted Natural Illustrations of Fish in China (Ichthyology in Context, 1500–1880), this bilingual workshop invites children to create shimmering tin-foil fish reliefs inspired by historical Chinese naturalist paintings.

Each participant studies one type of fish, its form, pattern, and story, then uses aluminum foil and round carving pens to sculpt and draw. Together, these individual works form a large blue-fabric “ocean mural,” symbolizing shared creativity and cross-cultural connection.

Through drawing, tracing, and storytelling, we reimagine the ocean as a space between China and San Francisco, past and present, memory and migration.
