EduTV #006: Huell Howser visits David Hockney

Join us for a screening of Visiting… with Huell Howser, in which Huell visits with world famous artist David Hockney in his Los Angeles studio.

A truly original force, Huell Howser graced the screens of Southern California PBS viewers throughout the ‘80s and ‘90s with his infectious joy, unending charm, and bountiful warmth. Guided by pure curiosity and generosity of spirit, Huell’s reportage/interview shows (Videolog, California’s Gold, and Visiting… with Huell Howser) earnestly capture the beauty and bounty of California in the final decades of the 20th century. From the grandiose to the minute, Huell was unparalleled in his ability to draw out interviewees, reel in viewers, and form a bond between the two. In this episode, Huell takes us to David Hockney’s studio in 1994 for a playful, informative, and unguarded interview with the exceptional artist.

To accompany the screening, we encourage you to read Further On… by Etel Adnan. All attendees will receive a specially designed booklet with the reading and a curated list of Huell’s subjects to take home.

The evening will begin with a short presentation about Howser’s eclectic life and journalism, and end with a post-film discussion on the interview, the reading, and the power of curiosity, generosity, and warmth to foster genuine connection.

Inspired by the spirit of publicly accessible educational programming from the 80s and 90s, Educational Television is a Problem Library project that archives short films, documentaries, and television programs we find valuable. Our aim is to reanimate television as a medium for education, provocation, and inspiration—and to celebrate curiosity in the mechanisms, mystery, and magic of the world.

Educational Television currently exists as a website streaming two channels 24/7. It invites a “slow viewing” approach by removing the ability to skip or pause. At our in-person screenings, we pair one or two films from the collection with a complementary (or contradictory) reading to expand our scope of inquiry, conversation, and reflection.
